At Duke Memorial Weekday School, children develop autonomy by practicing self-help/life skills, develop a deeper sense of self by exploring personal interests, become more confident through interaction with peers and teachers, and learn about what it means to be a member of a group. As teachers, we facilitate this learning to take place by planning with intention. We select activities that address our unique group of students’ needs and strengths. Age-level activities such as field trips, dramatic performances, and holiday celebrations allow Kindergarten students to join together with other classes for special learning opportunities. Special visits from community helpers, storytellers and others enrich the curriculum.
